TLDR Combined therapy effectively improved severe alopecia areata in all patients after 6 months.
The study analyzed 83 cases of severe alopecia areata, with patients averaging 27 years old and a disease course of 7.6 months. A significant portion of patients (56.6%) were ≤16 years old, and 19.3% had a family history of alopecia areata. Atopy was present in 32.5% of cases, and 25.3% had nail changes. Autoimmune diseases were found in 14.4% of patients, with vitiligo and thyroid disorders each in 6% of cases. Stressful events preceded hair loss in 22.9% of patients. Combined therapy, including oral and topical corticosteroids and minoxidil, led to improvement in all patients after 6 months, despite some side effects like injection site pain (70.1%) and facial hair thickening (25.3%). The study concluded that combined therapy was effective, aligning with previous research despite some differences in family history and atopy.
