TLDR More than half of patients who had acromegaly surgery experienced hair loss, with varying degrees of recovery.
In a study from 2013 involving 484 patients who had undergone surgery for acromegaly, 54% (263 patients) reported hair loss within 3 to 6 months post-operation. Hair loss severity was minimal in 10% (50 patients), moderate in 24% (117 patients), and severe in 20% (96 patients). The condition was more prevalent in females, those cured of acromegaly, and those with severe postoperative growth hormone deficiency. Of those who experienced hair loss, 32% (85 patients) had full recovery, 34% (88 patients) had incomplete recovery, and 34% (90 patients) had little to no recovery, with recovery being less common in males and those with severe hair loss. The study is significant as it is the first large-scale, single-centre clinical study to address this issue and suggests that patients should be informed about the potential for hair loss after acromegaly surgery.
