TLDR Citrullus colocynthis extracts may promote hair growth as effectively as minoxidil.
The study evaluated the effects of petroleum ether and ethanolic extracts of Citrullus colocynthis on hair growth in albino rats. These extracts were applied topically and compared to a 2% minoxidil solution as a positive control. The extracts significantly reduced the time for hair growth initiation and completion compared to control animals. Additionally, the treatment induced a higher percentage of hair follicles (>70%) to enter the anagenic phase compared to minoxidil (67%). The effects of 2% and 5% petroleum ether extracts were comparable to minoxidil, suggesting potential efficacy in promoting hair growth.
