TLDR Chitin and chitosans from seafood waste are eco-friendly and useful in cosmetics for skin, hair, nail, and oral care.
This review highlighted the potential of chitin and chitosans, abundant in the biosphere and seafood waste, as renewable resources for cosmetic science. It focused on eco-friendly bioextraction methods like enzymatic deproteinization, bacteria fermentation, and enzymatic deacetylation. Due to their biodegradability, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and bioactivity, these marine polymers were used in biomedical and pharmaceutical products. The review also discussed advanced cosmetic products utilizing chitin and chitosans, addressing therapeutic aspects of skin, hair, nail, and oral care, and presented them as innovative solutions for various anatomical issues.
