TLDR Children with trichotillomania often pull hair from their scalp and may have other mental health issues.
This retrospective analysis reviewed 78 cases of childhood trichotillomania (TTM) at a tertiary general hospital in Mumbai, India, from 2009 to 2014. The study found that the scalp was the primary site for hair pulling among the children. Comorbid psychiatric conditions such as ADHD, conduct disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder were also observed. Treatment commonly involved selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine and escitalopram, as well as second-generation antipsychotics like aripiprazole. This study represented the largest collection of childhood TTM cases reported in Asia at the time.

A 29-year-old woman is experiencing gradual hair thinning since age 15, suspects Androgenic Alopecia, and has tried 5% minoxidil with little success. She has purchased various hair loss treatments including minoxidil, dutasteride, finasteride, and spironolactone, but is cautious about starting them due to potential interactions with her ADHD medication.

DHT affects hair follicles, contributing to hair loss, but the exact mechanism is unclear. Treatments like finasteride and minoxidil are used to manage hair loss, though they may have side effects and varying effectiveness.
