TLDR Early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment can significantly improve trichotillomania in children.
This case report discusses an 11-year-old male with childhood-onset trichotillomania, characterized by compulsive hair pulling and associated symptoms like distractibility and irritability. Despite normal laboratory results, a diagnosis was made using ICD-10 criteria. Treatment involved a combination of medications, including SSRIs, antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines, along with psychological interventions such as psychoeducation and habit reversal therapy. The patient showed significant improvement, with a 70–80% reduction in hair-pulling behavior and visible hair regrowth. The report emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and comprehensive management of trichotillomania in children, advocating for greater clinical awareness and discussion.
