TLDR Chemical treatments and light exposure damage hair proteins.
The study by S. B. Ruetsch et al. used microspectrophotometric and electrophoretic methods to analyze the effects of chemical and photo-oxidative damage on hair. They mapped the diffusion of molecules in untreated and treated hair fibers using fluorescence microscopy and calculated diffusion coefficients. SDS-PAGE was employed to confirm these findings and to show how hair proteins are altered by cosmetic treatments and light exposure. UV microspectrophotometry also supported the results, providing an alternative method to evaluate photo-oxidative damage.
