Cell Proliferation During Fiber Growth Initiation in Ferret Hair Follicles

    D. P. Saywell, A. J. Nixon
TLDR Ferret hair growth starts between 0 and 4 days after melatonin treatment, with cell growth peaking in the hair germ and declining as the hair matures.
The study described the patterns of cell proliferation in ferret hair follicles during the initiation of autumn fur growth. Researchers synchronized the start of fur growth in 32 ferrets using melatonin implants and then collected skin samples over a period of 14 days to track the development of hair follicles. They used bromodeoxyuridine to label S-phase cells in vivo and an indirect immunocytochemical method to visualize proliferating cells in various parts of the hair follicle. They found no cell proliferation in telogen follicles until 4 days post-melatonin implant. The hair germ had the highest number of proliferating cells, which continued to be high at 14 days post-implant. In other tissues, cell proliferation peaked during mid to late proanagen and then declined as follicles reached the metanagen phase. The study concluded that critical signaling events for hair growth in ferrets occur between 0 and 4 days after melatonin implantation, highlighting distinct processes of follicular regeneration and fiber growth during the proanagen phase of the hair cycle.

community Rosemary oil, peppermint oil, mucuna pruriens - two weeks in

in Treatment  84 upvotes 1 year ago
A user who is trying alternative treatments, such as mucuna pruriens dissolved in water/alcohol and a blend of jojoba oil, rosemary oil, and peppermint oil, for hair loss. Other users have shared anecdotal evidence, discussed the potential effectiveness of certain treatments, and questioned the time sensitivity of experimenting with new treatments.

community Does melatonin dissolve in isopropyl alcohol

in Technology  7 upvotes 1 year ago
The conversation discusses making a topical melatonin solution for hair loss treatment, questioning if isopropyl alcohol can dissolve melatonin. Melatonin is soluble in lipids and alcohol, but it's unstable and should be mixed fresh regularly; it may help hair growth by affecting certain cellular signaling pathways and has anti-androgenic effects.

      community Verteporfin and Microneedling

      in Treatments 6 months ago
Clinical studies by Dr. Barghouthi and Dr. Bloxham indicate that Verteporfin, when used with FUE and FUT hair transplantation methods, shows promise in hair follicle regeneration and minimal scarring due to its ability to inhibit Yes-associated protein (YAP). Microneedling at depths of 3-3.5mm, combined with Verteporfin, could potentially reactivate dormant follicles, although the optimal dosage and application method are still under investigation. Concerns remain about the DHT sensitivity of regenerated follicles, highlighting the need for further research to optimize trauma levels and Verteporfin concentrations to achieve effective and scar-free hair regeneration.

community Fats on your Head to Stop Hair Loss?

      in Research/Science  142 upvotes 10 months ago
The conversation discusses the potential of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, like oleic and linoleic acid, as an additional treatment for hair loss, which may inhibit the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT and promote hair growth. Users humorously suggest using oils topically and discuss other hair loss treatments, but the main focus is on the science behind fatty acids and their role in hair health.
