TLDR Epidermal growth factor speeds up hair cell regeneration in chickens after gentamicin damage.
The study investigated hair cell regeneration in young chickens damaged by gentamicin and the effect of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on this process. After gentamicin treatment, hair cell loss was over 51%, but regeneration was observed, with new hair cells appearing by the 5th day and maturing by the 21st day. Supporting and hyaline cells were identified as sources of regeneration. EGF significantly enhanced regeneration, with more hair cells and a quicker recovery to normal basilar papilla structure by the 14th day compared to the gentamicin-only group. The study concluded that EGF promoted hair cell regeneration following gentamicin damage.
