TLDR Clomiphene citrate is a cheap and simple treatment for low testosterone that works as well as human chorionic gonadotropin, alone or combined, especially for men who want to keep their fertility.
In a study involving 282 men with hypogonadism, clomiphene citrate (CC), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and a combination of both were compared for their effectiveness in restoring testosterone levels and improving symptoms. The study found that all three treatments were equally effective in increasing serum testosterone. The editorial comment highlighted that single-agent CC is a simple, inexpensive option that can be used as a treatment for hypogonadism, particularly when maintaining fertility is a concern. CC's effectiveness was noted to be comparable to that of hCG alone or in combination with CC, making it a cost-effective alternative for testosterone replacement therapy in men who wish to preserve fertility.
