TLDR Age-related hair loss is linked to changes in blood vessels, stem cells, and aging cells, and understanding these can help keep hair healthy as we age.
This review discusses the main morphological factors contributing to age-related alopecia, including involutional changes in the vascular bed and skin lymphatic system, depletion of stem cell niches in hair follicles, and the mitochondrial theory of aging. Understanding these factors is crucial for developing strategies to slow or neutralize aging processes, which could significantly benefit fields like trichology, cosmetology, and geriatrics. The goal is to enable individuals to maintain healthy hair even in old age, with advancements in medical technologies and pharmaceuticals playing a key role.
