TLDR Calcitriol and metformin together are more effective for treating PCOS and lowering MCP-1 than metformin alone.
In a study involving 96 patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the effects of calcitriol combined with metformin were compared to metformin treatment alone. The patients were divided into two groups of 48 each, with the control group receiving only metformin and the observation group receiving both metformin and calcitriol for 3 months. The results showed that both groups experienced improvements in PCOS symptoms such as menstrual irregularities, acne, hirsutism, ovarian volume, and polycystic changes, but the observation group had significantly better outcomes. Additionally, serum monocyte chemotactic factor-1 (MCP-1) levels decreased in both groups after treatment, with the observation group showing a significantly greater reduction. The study concluded that the combination of calcitriol and metformin was more effective in treating PCOS and reducing serum MCP-1 levels than metformin alone.
