TLDR Deformable vesicular carriers improve drug delivery for skin conditions and systemic treatments.
This review study explores the use of vesicular carriers, such as liposomes, niosomes, invasomes, and transferosomes, for enhancing drug delivery through the follicular route, which faces challenges like sebum flow and size-selectivity. Deformable carriers outperform conventional liposomes in improving follicular drug penetration, and the use of permeation enhancers can further enhance liposome effectiveness. These vesicular systems are primarily used for treating conditions like alopecia, acne, and topical infections, and show potential for systemic delivery of drugs like antihypertensives and insulin. Techniques like local hair massage and iontophoresis can further improve the penetration of these vesicles.
