Cosmetic Treatment Using Botulinum Toxin in the Oral and Maxillofacial Area: A Narrative Review of Aesthetic Techniques

This narrative review examines the use of botulinum toxin (BoNT) for cosmetic treatments in the oral and maxillofacial areas, focusing on its application for dynamic wrinkles and muscle hyperactivity. It provides a practical guide for safe and effective BoNT application, detailing injection points, depths, and doses, with specific considerations for Asian and Caucasian populations. The review highlights the benefits of ultrasonography-assisted injections to enhance accuracy and safety, and discusses contraindications and complications, such as neuromuscular disorders and unrealistic expectations. It emphasizes the importance of precise injection techniques to avoid complications like brow ptosis and asymmetrical smiles, and calls for standardized guidelines and further research to optimize BoNT applications.
