TLDR Higher NLR, PLR, and MPV may help diagnose androgenetic alopecia.
This study investigated blood indices in patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) by comparing 30 male and 20 female AGA patients to 30 healthy volunteers matched by age and BMI. The research found that while platelet (PLT) count was lower in AGA patients compared to controls, the difference was not significant. However, mean platelet volume (MPV), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were significantly higher in AGA patients. These findings suggested that elevated NLR, PLR, and MPV could be associated with AGA, potentially serving as diagnostic biomarkers for the condition.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
