TLDR Astaxanthin may improve health by reducing inflammation, stress, and cholesterol, and by enhancing skin health and sports performance.
The 2021 document examined the bioactivity of Astaxanthin, a marine carotenoid with antioxidant activity significantly greater than vitamin E. Astaxanthin was found to have multiple potential health benefits, including anti-inflammation, immunomodulation, stress reduction, LDL cholesterol oxidation suppression, skin health improvement, and enhanced sports performance. It was also suggested to reduce exercise-induced muscle damage and prevent lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity, atherosclerosis, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension. Japanese clinicians were using Astaxanthin as a supplement for patients dissatisfied with or unable to take conventional medications. Clinical trials and case studies were investigating its effects on chronic diseases and conditions including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, CVD, infertility, atopic dermatitis, androgenetic alopecia, ulcerative colitis, and sarcopenia.
