TLDR A patient with myotonic dystrophy had several autoimmune disorders and thyroid cancer, suggesting a possible link between these conditions.
The document reports a case of a 49-year-old female with myotonic dystrophy (MD) who also had type I diabetes mellitus, Hashimoto's thyroiditis with hypothyroidism, and follicular variant of papillary thyroid cancer. This is the first reported case of such an association. The patient had a history of progressive muscle weakness, cataracts, dysphagia, cognitive dysfunction, and a family history of MD. She had difficult to control diabetes with an HbA1c of 9.9% and had undergone thyroidectomy and I-131 therapy for thyroid cancer. The study suggests a potential cause and effect relationship between autoimmune endocrinopathies, thyroid carcinoma, and MD. It emphasizes the importance of endocrine evaluation and therapy in MD patients, especially considering that insulin resistance and cognitive dysfunction can complicate diabetes management and increase the risk of complications.
