TLDR Arctiin helps protect hair cells from damage and death caused by oxidative stress.
In the 2014 study, arctiin, extracted from Arctium lappa, was shown to protect human hair dermal papilla cells (HHDPCs) from oxidative stress caused by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Arctiin pretreatment significantly reduced H₂O₂-induced cell viability loss, cell death, and cell cycle arrest, as well as decreased the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). The study also found that arctiin altered the expression of 30 microRNAs (miRNAs), which are thought to be involved in the MAPK and Wnt signaling pathways, crucial for cell proliferation and potentially important in treating or preventing alopecia. These findings suggest arctiin's potential as a therapeutic agent for ROS-induced cell dysfunction in HHDPCs, which are essential for hair growth and follicle health. The number of cells or participants in the study was not specified in the summary.
