TLDR Samhwang-Sasimtang extract promotes hair growth and has strong antioxidant properties.
The study evaluated the antioxidant activity and hair growth effects of Samhwang-Sasimtang (SS) extract in C57BL/6 male mice. The extract demonstrated strong antioxidant properties, including phenolic content of 28.44 mg/g and significant free radical scavenging activity. Hair growth was assessed by applying the extract to the mice's backs for 4 weeks. The study included 4 groups (control, saline; positive control, 3% minoxidil; experimental 1, 1% SS; experimental 2, 2% SS) with 10 mice each. Results showed that hair growth was most significant in the positive control group, followed by the 2% SS group, 1% SS group, and control group. Histological analysis revealed increased hair follicle ratio and thickness, higher enzyme activities, and elevated levels of hair growth factors (IGF-1 and VEGF) in the SS-treated groups. Hair growth inhibition factors (TGF-β1 and Caspase-3) were reduced in the SS-treated groups compared to the control. The findings suggested that SS extract could be an effective natural agent for promoting hair growth.
