TLDR Kaempferia galanga extract could be a good ingredient for anti-dandruff hair cream.
The study conducted on February 26, 2018, assessed the antifungal properties of ethanolic extracts from Kaempferia galanga, Citrus hystrix, and Cinnamomum zeylanicum against the dandruff-causing fungus Malassezia spp. The extracts demonstrated minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 5 mg/mL, with inhibition zones measuring 14.5 ± 3.8 mm for C. zeylanicum, 12.0 ± 1.8 mm for K. galanga, and 12.0 ± 0.8 mm for C. hystrix after 3 days. Although positive controls Zinc Pyrithione (ZPT) and imidazole showed greater inhibition, the study successfully formulated an anti-fungal hair cream with K. galanga extract, which exhibited good physicochemical properties, including stability, viscosity of 543.7 ± 19.2, and a pH of 5.46 ± 0.01. The study concluded that K. galanga ethanolic extract is a promising active ingredient for anti-fungal hair cream formulations to potentially control dandruff.
