TLDR Hedychium spicatum has medicinal properties but needs more research for scientific validation and use.
The document is a systematic review of Hedychium spicatum, a plant used traditionally for various medicinal purposes and in industries such as food, cosmetics, and perfumery. The review reveals that the rhizomes of H. spicatum contain compounds like labdane terpenes, hedychinone, and polyphenols, which have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, supporting many of its traditional uses. Pharmacological studies have shown the plant's potential in treating conditions like asthma, pain, inflammation, and liver disorders, and it has demonstrated hepatoprotective, cytotoxic, antihyperglycemic, nootropic, and anthelmintic properties. The hexane extract and pentadecane from the plant showed 33% and 30% hair growth promotion activity, respectively, which is less effective than minoxidil at 47%, but without minoxidil's side effects. Despite these findings, the review calls for more research to identify the active compounds and establish the safety and efficacy of H. spicatum for medical use. It also suggests that genetic diversity affects the accumulation of phenolic compounds, which could be used for variety development and cultivation standardization. The review concludes that while H. spicatum has valuable pharmacological properties, exact scientific validation is needed, and further studies are necessary to harness its full medicinal potential.
