TLDR Hair loss may indicate a higher risk of heart disease and other health issues related to metabolism.
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), the most common form of hair loss in men and women, is not just a cosmetic issue but may also be a marker for underlying metabolic dysregulation. Recent studies suggest a strong association between AGA and metabolic syndrome (MetS), a group of conditions that increase the risk for heart disease and other health problems. This association is believed to be influenced by androgens and genetic predisposition. Early intervention in patients with AGA could serve as a preventive strategy for MetS and related cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, healthcare providers are advised to consider screening for MetS components in patients presenting with AGA, especially those with a family history of metabolic or cardiovascular disorders.
