TLDR Finasteride and levofloxacin effectively reduce chronic bacterial prostatitis severity.
The study investigated the effects of androgen deprivation on chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP) in a rat model. CBP was induced in 100 male Wistar rats, with 62% developing the condition. These rats were divided into five groups: control, castration, finasteride, estrogen, and levofloxacin. Over 4 weeks, the finasteride and levofloxacin groups showed statistically significant reductions in bacterial growth and improvements in prostatic inflammation compared to the control group. The castration and estrogen groups also showed improvements, but not significantly. The study concluded that androgen deprivation, particularly with finasteride, was effective in reducing CBP severity, suggesting that combining finasteride with levofloxacin could be a promising treatment strategy.
