TLDR The study found that hair transplant complications are rare, with swelling being the most common issue.
The retrospective study analyzed 1030 primary hair transplantation procedures from January 2014 to January 2018, involving 994 male and 36 female patients with a mean age of 37.2 years. It aimed to estimate the donor scalp area with the highest probability of containing the desired number of follicular units and to analyze postoperative complications. The average hair density was 180 hairs/cm², and the follicular unit density was 80 units/cm², with 2-hair follicular units being the most common. Complications were relatively uncommon, with frontal edema being the most frequent, affecting nearly half of the patients. Other complications included folliculitis, hypopigmentation, and skin necrosis, with the follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique reducing donor area complications. The study provides significant data on follicular unit distribution and postoperative complications in hair transplantation.
