TLDR Topical treatment with amphotericin B and DMSO effectively healed a horse's skin infection.
This case report detailed the successful topical treatment of a 12-year-old gelding with an atypically located equine cutaneous pythiosis using amphotericin B and DMSO. The horse presented with a 20-cm tumoral mass on the left flank, which was confirmed to be caused by Pythium insidiosum through histopathological examination. Following surgical excision and cauterization, the wound was treated twice daily with a solution of amphotericin B and DMSO, leading to rapid healing and significant reduction in wound size. The treatment was effective, economically viable, and posed low risk compared to systemic antifungal therapy. The horse showed complete healing and hair regrowth 10 days post-discharge, demonstrating the efficacy of the topical approach in managing equine pythiosis.
