TLDR Fluconazole is effective against animal strains, while Itraconazole works for some human strains, and longer contact with disinfectants like iodine and Virkon S is crucial.
The study conducted in Beni-Suef, Egypt, evaluated the prevalence of dermatophytosis in a beef farm and assessed the efficacy of antifungal agents and disinfectants against Trichophyton verrucosum. Out of 120 calves examined, 35% showed ringworm lesions, and T. verrucosum was isolated from 45 samples, including those from farm workers. Animal isolates were 100% sensitive to Fluconazole, while human strains showed 66.7% sensitivity to Itraconazole. Disinfectants like iodine (7%) and Virkon S (1%) were effective at longer contact times, emphasizing the importance of contact duration in reducing dermatophyte resistance. The study highlighted the occupational hazard posed by T. verrucosum and the need for improved hygiene and appropriate use of antifungal agents and disinfectants to prevent resistance.
