TLDR Bariatric surgery can lead to zinc deficiency and hair loss.
This review examined the link between zinc deficiency and alopecia in post-bariatric surgery patients, analyzing 32 studies. It found that 93.10% of the studies reported zinc deficiency as a common postoperative complication, with decreased food intake and absorption being key factors. Alopecia was noted in 17.24% of the studies, predominantly affecting females. The review concluded that while bariatric surgery effectively managed morbid obesity, it was associated with zinc deficiency and hair loss, suggesting the need for a meta-analysis to explore the benefits of micronutrient supplementation to prevent these issues.
