Adverse Event Reports of Alopecia for Sunscreen Ingredients and Branded Products

TLDR Some sunscreen ingredients may be linked to hair loss, but more research is needed.
This study investigated the potential link between sunscreen use and alopecia using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System. Among 723 sunscreen products and ingredients analyzed, a combination of avobenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, and oxybenzone showed a significant association with alopecia reports across three analytical methods, with 7 reports indicating disproportionality. However, no other ingredient combinations or branded products showed a similar association. The study emphasizes that these findings do not estimate risk or ensure product safety, suggesting the need for further research on the temporal relationship between sunscreen use and alopecia. The lack of association with many common ingredients, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, may provide reassurance to users concerned about hair loss.
