TLDR Dr. Muhammad Ahmad created a simpler system to better describe male pattern hair loss.
In 2016, Dr. Muhammad Ahmad proposed a new classification system for documenting male pattern hair loss (MPHL), aiming to improve upon the limitations of the widely used Norwood-Hamilton scale. The new system, called Ahmad's NPRT system, includes four points: Norwood Classification, Temporal Peaks/Points, Reverse (or Retrograde) Thinning, and Overall Thinning. Each of these points has a grading scale to provide a more detailed assessment of hair loss. The Norwood grades remain as the main part of the classification, while the other three points are expressed in brackets. For example, a type VI hair loss could be expressed as VI (P1, T2, R2) or VI (P2, T0, R0), etc. The system was designed to be less complicated and easily memorizable, while addressing the lacking issues in previous classifications. The author suggested that future multicenter studies would be beneficial to evaluate its effectiveness in documenting temporal hair loss patterns in males across a larger clinical population.
