TLDR Avicennia Marina extract and avicequinone C can reduce hair loss hormone production and increase hair growth factors, suggesting they could be used to treat androgenic alopecia.
The 2015 study investigated the effects of Avicennia Marina heartwood extract and avicequinone C on dermal papilla cells from patients with androgenic alopecia. The substances were found to inhibit the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, reducing the production of a hair loss-related hormone by 74% and 68% respectively. They also inhibited the translocation of the androgen receptor complex into the nucleus, leading to an increase in the expression of growth factors VEGF and HGF, which are important for hair growth. The study suggests potential for the development of Avicennia Marina extract and avicequinone C as treatments for androgenic alopecia.
