A role of placental growth factor in hair growth

    The study investigated the role of placental growth factor (PlGF) in hair growth by analyzing gene expression in dermal papilla cells (DPCs) from human hair follicles. PlGF expression decreased with cell subculture, but its application enhanced hair shaft elongation in ex vivo cultures and accelerated hair follicle growth in an in vivo depilation model. PlGF promoted cell survival by increasing phosphorylated ERK, cyclin D1, phosphorylated Akt, and Bcl2 levels. The findings suggested that PlGF could be a potential therapeutic target for treating alopecia.
