TLDR Platelet Rich Plasma can potentially help in restoring hair loss, but more research with larger groups is needed to confirm its effectiveness and standardize its use.
Five years ago, a review was conducted on the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) as a treatment for Androgenic Alopecia (AGA), a common form of hair loss. The review included studies published after 2015, involving 180 participants (115 men and 65 women). PRP, rich in growth factors, was believed to aid in hair follicle restoration with minimal to no side effects. The effectiveness of PRP was measured through various parameters like total number of hairs, hair thickness, density, root strength, and before and after photos. Out of 6 studies, 2 showed no improvement while 4 showed statistically significant improvement. However, due to inconsistent results and methods, the review concluded that more controlled studies with a larger number of participants were needed to establish a standard for PRP preparation, application, and treatment frequency.
April 2021 in “Journal of Investigative Dermatology” PRP treatment helps hair growth and reduces hair loss in women, but more research needed.
