TLDR 5α-reductase inhibitors may help skin flaps survive better by affecting nitric oxide.
The study investigated the effects of 5α-reductase inhibitors, azelaic acid and finasteride, on the survival of skin flap grafts in a rat model, focusing on the role of nitric oxide (NO) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Conducted on 42 male rats divided into six groups, the research found that both azelaic acid and finasteride significantly increased iNOS expression and NO levels in the graft tissue, which correlated with improved tissue survival. The findings suggested that changes in NO metabolism were involved in the enhanced survival of skin flaps mediated by these inhibitors.
