TLDR Emulgels are promising for delivering drugs topically due to their easy spreadability and stability.
Emulgels were identified as an innovative topical drug delivery system that combined the properties of gels and emulsions, offering advantages such as greaselessness, easy spreadability, and improved stability, particularly for hydrophobic drugs. They were prepared by mixing oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions with gels, providing a dual release control system, and were used for delivering analgesics, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-acne drugs. Despite potential disadvantages like skin irritation, emulgels were noted for enhancing spreadability, adhesion, viscosity, and extrusion, making them a promising option for future drug delivery systems, with examples including Miconaz-H-emulgel, Isofen emulgel, and Diclon emulgel.
