Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) is a powerful technique that allows scientists to visualize surfaces at the atomic level. It works by scanning a sharp metal tip very close to the surface of a conductive material, measuring the tunneling current that flows between the tip and the surface. This current is highly sensitive to the distance between the tip and the surface, enabling the creation of detailed, three-dimensional images of the atomic structure.
