Rete ridges, also known as epidermal ridges or rete pegs, are the downward projections of the epidermis into the dermis. They interlock with the upward projections of the dermis, called dermal papillae, to strengthen the connection between these two skin layers, enhancing the skin's structural integrity and resistance to shear forces. This interlocking structure is crucial for maintaining skin stability and facilitating nutrient exchange between the layers.
