December 2021 in “Pharmaceutics” The study developed and optimized a nanoemulsion containing garlic oil (GO), apple cider vinegar (APCV), and minoxidil (MX) to treat alopecia areata. The optimal formulation, with 0.180% GO, 0.500% Smix, and 0.320% APCV, had a droplet size of 110 nm, MX steady-state flux (Jss) of 3 μg/cm²/h, and a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.275 μg/mL against Propionibacterium acnes. The nanoemulsion showed enhanced stability and significantly improved MX skin permeation (2.12-fold increase) compared to aqueous dispersion, following the Korsmeyer–Peppas model of super case II transport. These results suggest that the MX-GO-APCV nanoemulsion could effectively enhance MX delivery and its therapeutic effects for alopecia areata.

June 2022 in “Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology” The gel with icariin speeds up wound healing, reduces scarring, and helps hair growth by controlling BMP4 signaling. It also reduces inflammation and improves wound quality in mice, adapts to different wound shapes, and gradually releases icariin to aid healing. It also prevents too much collagen and myofibroblast formation during skin healing.

November 2022 in “Journal of Nanobiotechnology” This study developed a scalable and high-throughput method for producing an injectable composite system combining platelet-rich plasma (PRP), cell-laden microcarriers, and hydrogels for hair follicle (HF) tissue engineering. The system, tested both in vitro and in vivo, significantly enhanced dermal papilla cell (DPC) proliferation, migration, and HF regeneration. In vivo experiments on mice showed that PRP-loaded microcarriers accelerated hair cycle transition and increased new hair follicle formation, with ~35 HFs and ~12 vessels per site. The findings suggest that this composite system could be a promising approach for treating hair loss and promoting hair growth through sustained release of growth factors and a conducive microenvironment.
January 2021 in “Journal of reports in pharmaceutical sciences” The study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a 2% minoxidil nanosuspension with an aqueous base for treating androgenetic alopecia areata in 70 patients over six months. Results indicated no significant difference in efficacy between the nanosuspension and the commercial product, but the nanosuspension demonstrated better safety and tolerability, suggesting it as a suitable alternative with enhanced patient compliance.
