March 2022 in “Dermatologic Therapy” This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial evaluated the effect of latanoprost 0.005% solution on scalp alopecia areata (AA) in 30 participants over 12 weeks. Participants received either latanoprost or a placebo, along with clobetasol 0.05% cream. The study found that latanoprost significantly increased hair density (37.2 ± 26.1 vs. 14.6 ± 18.6) and hair regrowth (58.3 ± 39.3 vs. 21.6 ± 24.1) compared to the control group, based on the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) system (p = 0.03 and 0.02, respectively). However, there were no significant differences in the reduction of the hair loss area, overall SALT scores, or side effects between the two groups. The results suggest that latanoprost 0.005% solution is safe and effective for increasing hair density and regrowth in scalp AA.
