January 1996 This study investigated the role of amino acids in human hair follicles, focusing on cysteine and arginine. It found that both amino acids were essential for hair growth and protein synthesis. Cysteine influenced hair fibre diameter, with reduced supply leading to thinning and growth retardation. Hair follicles utilized the amino acid transporter ASC for cysteine uptake, while arginine was primarily incorporated into proteins in the hair root sheaths and fibres. Arginine's availability affected energy metabolism, as indicated by changes in lactate production. The study also noted that certain peptide transporters were not expressed in hair follicles, and glutamate was transported more slowly than other amino acids.
The study investigated the effects of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) compared to conventional minoxidil treatment on androgenic alopecia (AGA) in 48 adult male albino rats. Results showed that stem cell therapy was more effective than minoxidil in treating AGA, as evidenced by changes in hair follicle dynamics, including a decrease in terminal hair number and an increase in vellus hair. Additionally, there were structural changes such as cavitations in hair and sheaths, collagen fiber deposition, and thinning of the arrector pili muscle. Overall, stem cell therapy demonstrated superior efficacy in promoting hair growth in AGA.
