August 2024 in “International Journal of Molecular Sciences” This study explores the potential of Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) therapy for treating Alopecia Areata (AA) using a mouse model. Out of 45 mice, 35 were induced with AA, and 21 received MSC therapy. The MSC-treated group exhibited significant hair regrowth and reduced local inflammatory cytokines compared to the control group. MSC therapy normalized gene expression related to hair cycle regulation, such as the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and decreased immune cell infiltration in the skin. Although serum cytokine levels showed no significant differences, tissue expression indicated notable changes. These findings suggest MSC therapy could be a promising treatment for AA, but further research is needed to confirm its efficacy in humans.
