    Surfactants, or surface-active agents, are compounds that lower the surface tension between two substances, such as a liquid and a solid or two liquids. They are commonly used in shampoos and conditioners to help spread the product evenly and to cleanse the hair by allowing water to mix with oils and dirt, making them easier to rinse away.
