January 2023 in “Iranian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research” The study found that Stauntonia hexaphylla extract can ameliorate androgenic alopecia (AGA) by inhibiting 5α-reductase and androgen receptor (AR) signaling, which are crucial in AGA development. In a mouse model and human follicle dermal papilla cells, the extract reduced dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels, decreased apoptosis, and promoted cell proliferation. Histological analysis showed increased hair growth, dermal thickness, and follicle number, along with prolonged anagen phase. The extract also downregulated TGF-β1 and DKK-1 expression while upregulating cyclin D, leading to increased keratinocyte proliferation and reduced apoptosis, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic agent for AGA.

4 citations,
August 2023 in “Nature Communications” The study investigates the periodic morphological patterns in mouse zigzag hair, which has 3 bends, and reveals that a change in the combination of hair progenitors and their micro-niche occurs every 3 days, leading to bend formation. Chimeric loss-of-function and gain-of-function experiments on Ptn and Aff3, genes upregulated before bend formation, showed defects in the downward movement of the micro-niche and the rhythm of bend formation. This demonstrates that the periodic change between progenitors and micro-niche is crucial for the unique infradian rhythm of zigzag hair.
