    GlossaryPeripilar Casts

small, white sheaths encircling hair shafts near the scalp

Peripilar casts are small, white, cylindrical sheaths that encircle the hair shaft near the scalp. They are often seen in conditions like alopecia areata or telogen effluvium and can be indicative of inflammation or other underlying scalp disorders. These casts can be mistaken for dandruff but are firmly attached to the hair and do not easily flake off.
