research Machine Learning Approach for Predicting Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in Oman-Based Cohort
The study designed a machine learning framework to predict Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) in a cohort of 219 Omani patients, with 138 having SLE and 81 having other rheumatologic diseases. Using Recursive Feature Selection (RFE) and the CatBoost classification algorithm, the model achieved an AUC score of 0.95 and a Sensitivity of 92%. The SHAP algorithm identified alopecia, renal disorders, Acute Cutaneous Lupus, hemolytic anemia, and patient age as key predictive features. The framework provides explainable predictions validated by rheumatologists, enabling early intervention and improved healthcare outcomes.

research The Future of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Treatment: The Promise of Selective Immunotherapies, Anifrolumab and Belimumab, Compared to Blanket Immunosuppressives
Recent research indicates that selective immunotherapies, such as anifrolumab and belimumab, are more effective in managing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) compared to traditional blanket immunosuppressive drugs. Anifrolumab targets type I interferons, while belimumab neutralizes BLyS to reduce autoantibody production, addressing the root cause of SLE rather than just alleviating symptoms. This paper discusses the immunology of SLE, compares traditional and selective treatments, and reviews clinical trial results for these newer therapies.
research Living With Lupus In Ireland: Results Of A Patient Survey
A survey conducted by Arthritis Ireland in late 2023, involving 57 respondents, revealed that lupus significantly impacts various aspects of life, including daily activities, family life, work, and mental health. Joint pain (88%) and extreme tiredness (86%) were the most common symptoms. Despite 93% being prescribed medication, 70% still experience flares at least every 3 months, and 45% report significant medication side-effects. The survey highlighted the importance of self-management, with 85% of respondents aware of its role. The findings underscore the substantial personal and financial costs of inadequate lupus treatment.
research Childhood Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Clinical and Immunologic Patterns in Mexican Children
This study analyzed 89 Mexican children with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE), including 23 males and 66 females, to compare clinical and immunologic patterns by gender. Males exhibited higher prevalence of serositis, positive anti-DNA antibodies (88.9% vs. 42.9%), and renal involvement, including granular casts, proteinuria, and lower glomerular filtration rates. Females showed more hair loss. Males had higher average hemoglobin levels (11.47 g/dL vs. 9.84 g/dL) and more frequent use of hydroxychloroquine, cyclophosphamide, and mycophenolate. The study suggests that gender-specific analysis could improve treatment strategies for cSLE.
