February 2004 in “Canadian Journal of Anesthesia/Journal canadien d anesthésie” In the document, three living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) donors developed occipital pressure alopecia (PA) during the perioperative period. These donors were healthy and had no past medical history. The surgeries were uneventful, with no episodes of intraoperative hypotension, hypoxia, or use of vasoconstrictor agents. The alopecia was noticed several days post-operation and corresponded with the site of the circular headrest used during surgery. Treatment with mometasone furoate ointment and scalp massage led to regression of alopecia in a few months. The study suggested that localized pressure-induced ischemia might cause temporary cessation of follicle activity, leading to alopecia, although the exact reasons for this association remained unclear.
