Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) is a contagious virus that causes infections in various parts of the body, most commonly the mouth (oral herpes) and genitals (genital herpes). There are two types: HSV-1, which typically causes cold sores around the mouth, and HSV-2, which usually results in genital sores. Both types can be transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or lesions, and while there is no cure, antiviral medications can help manage outbreaks and reduce transmission risk.
