    GlossaryMyocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)

interruption of blood flow to heart muscle causing tissue damage

Myocardial Infarction, commonly known as a heart attack, occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is blocked for a long enough time that part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies. This blockage is often caused by a buildup of plaque (a mix of fat, cholesterol, and other substances) in the coronary arteries, which can rupture and form a clot that obstructs blood flow.
