54 citations,
June 2008 in “Planta Medica” The study investigated the effects of hinokitiol (HK) on the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, which is involved in skin inflammation and hair follicle apoptosis. HK was found to effectively suppress TNF-α production in LPS-activated macrophage-like cells, suggesting that the inhibition occurs at the transcriptional level. Additionally, HK down-regulated the phosphorylation of PDK1, Akt/PKB, and ERK, leading to a reduction in NF-κB activation. These findings indicated that HK could potentially treat hair loss by suppressing factors that promote follicular apoptosis and possibly stimulating new hair growth.
14 citations,
December 2021 in “International journal of molecular sciences” Growth hormone levels affect hair growth and loss, with too much causing excess hair and too little leading to hair loss.
8 citations,
August 2014 in “Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications” The study explored the impact of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) overexpression in hair follicle keratinocytes on stem cell behavior and tumorigenesis, particularly its interaction with Notch signaling. Using two mouse models, K6-ODC/SKH-1 and K14-ODC/SKH-1, it was found that ODC overexpression in K6-ODC/SKH-1 mice led to a significant increase in tumor development and invasiveness, with 15±2.5 tumors per mouse compared to 6.8±1.5 in K14-ODC/SKH-1 mice. This was linked to an expansion of the stem cell compartment and a down-regulation of Notch signaling, suggesting that ODC may enhance skin carcinogenesis by promoting stem-like cancer-initiating cells and contributing to invasive squamous cell carcinomas.

21 citations,
November 2015 in “Phytomedicine” The study investigated the effects of glycyrrhizic acid on human dermal papilla cells, which are crucial for hair growth. It was found that glycyrrhizic acid significantly reduced the stem cell-like properties of these cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. This reduction was linked to the interruption of the ATP-dependent tyrosine kinase/glycogen synthase kinase 3β pathway, leading to the down-regulation of the β-catenin signaling pathway and decreased expression of self-renewal transcription factors such as Oct-4, Nanog, Sox2, ZEB1, and Snail. These findings suggested that glycyrrhizic acid could be used to suppress unwanted hair growth by targeting the stemness of dermal papilla cells.
