December 2020 in “The Medical journal of Basrah University” The study investigated the role of vitamin D in female pattern hair loss (FPHL) among 190 Iraqi women, comprising 95 patients with FPHL and 95 healthy controls. Results showed that the mean vitamin D level was significantly lower in the FPHL group (13.8±2.6 ng/mL) compared to the control group (37.6±4.7 ng/mL, p<0.001). Additionally, 86.1% of FPHL patients had low vitamin D levels versus 36.9% of controls (p<0.001). Elevated alkaline phosphatase levels were also more common in the FPHL group (81% vs. 19%, p<0.001). The study concluded that low serum vitamin D levels might contribute to the development of FPHL, indicating a potential etiopathogenic role of vitamin D in this condition.
