A 2-year-old boy presented with a 20 cm annular plaque on his forehead and scalp, leading to non-scarring alopecia. Despite treatment with anti-fungal cream, shampoo, and topical steroids, there was no improvement. Skin biopsies revealed a dense perifollicular infiltrate, and blood tests were normal. The condition was diagnosed as lupus profundus, a rare variant of lupus erythematosus, which is uncommon in children. The boy responded well to oral steroids, with hair regrowth but residual subcutaneous atrophy. He was started on hydroxychloroquine and monitored, with no evidence of systemic autoimmune disease. Lupus profundus can occur in isolation or as part of DLE or SLE, and treatment options include antimalarials and systemic steroids.

January 2022 in “International Journal of Trichology” The study compared the efficacy of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) delivered through microneedling versus traditional intralesional injection in treating alopecia areata (AA) in 60 patients. Group 1 received microneedling with local application of injectable TA, while Group 2 received intradermal TA injections, both over three sessions at 3-week intervals. Results showed a mean hair regrowth of 66.36% in Group 1 and 69.75% in Group 2 at week 9, with no significant statistical difference (P = 0.664). Thirteen patients in Group 1 achieved 100% regrowth, and 16 patients in Group 2 achieved 50%-99% regrowth. The study concluded that both methods had similar efficacy, with microneedling providing more uniform but less dense hair regrowth and fewer adverse effects.
